Highlights

As a member of HOSA, students can gain countless invaluable experiences.
Here are some highlights of previous experiences
"During my first amazing Cal-HOSA RLC visit, I learned a variety of knowledge and skills that will definitely guide my future health career pathway. For example, during the opening speech given by Cal-HOSA’s State Treasurer, Crystal Chang, I learned specifically what HOSA is and how this national student organization can ultimately develop effective leadership qualities and skills while strengthening network and teamwork abilities. Besides the interactive and lively ice breakers throughout this event, HOSA members also actively participated in workshops. These informative workshops thoroughly covered a variety of topics such as drug usages, dental offices, community awareness, and how to successfully lead your HOSA chapter. In addition, HOSA members also experienced a live speech given by the candidates for the Cal-HOSA’s Regional Vice President Position. These candidates were also giving impromptu responses to HOSA members’ questions, therefore expanding their academic and technical skills that are necessary in a realistic career. In my opinion, I personally enjoyed the workshop, how to successfully lead your HOSA chapter. In this workshop, I learned not only how to effectively run your HOSA chapter, but also how to become a better leader in general. To me, this is one of the key life skill that a person must have in order to become successful in their life."

"RLC was absolutely great. Overall, I learned so much and met so many new people. Throughout the day, we, the HOSA members, participated in a variety of activities, ranging from lighthearted and fun to serious and informative. Since I was running for Region 4 Vice President, my RLC experience started off with the officer test. I was running against 2 other amazing candidates, who treated me with respect as I did to them. After the testing, I joined the rest of the HOSA members in a fun “chicken and egg” icebreaker in which everyone got up and started to interact with anyone and everyone. We then went to different workshops; the workshop I went to was the one for chapter officers. It was led by Cal-HOSA Treasurer and DBHS HOSA President Crystal Chang, and it allowed everyone in the room to get up and actively engage in thoughtful discussion with one another. This discussion gave me a better sense of what being an officer—and a HOSA member—really means. I learned many things that I can apply in my real life situations. After the workshop were the candidate speeches and Q&A session. It was my first time speaking in front of an audience that large in such a long time, I felt incredible. Although I did not win the campaign, what I did win was something truly memorable—the new connections I made and the new skills I learned. The most important part of RLC to me (other than the free food) was the fact that I got the opportunity to speak with so many different people from different schools in our region, all of which had the one same interest as me—healthcare. I’d love to go to RLC again next year. But my next goal as of now is SLC. I’ve got a lot more coming my way."

It was a great experience to learn how to deal with common day issues like preventing emergencies, basic first aid and CPR for our our four-legged friends!
--Jeffrey Lam, October 2016
The Pet First-Aid and CPR event discussed about how to respond to an animal in the case of emergency such as heat stroke, and how to be prepared for an emergency. We also learned the basics of CPR for pets and animals.
--Rick Liu, October 2016
Learning about how to take care of your pets in an emergency was really eye-opening because I have always wanted a dog, and I knew having one would be hard work, but this seminar really showed me just how much hard work is needed and how much you need to know to be the best pet-owner you can be for your pet.

This event was very educational and enjoyable.  As an animal- lover, the thought of a possibility of saving one's life in attaining this knowledge made this experience priceless. Although I wasn't able to attend the entire class, I acquired knowledge in becoming a better pet- owner, how to respond and prevent pet heat stroke and poisoning. I am very grateful for the opportunity to attend this class.
